History of Historically Black Colleges and Univerisities (HBCU)

The establishment of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States was during late 1800s. Denied entry to traditional collegiate institutions for people of African descent was aligned to slavery and segregation. African Americans were prohibited from being educated with their white peers because of racial differences and change was needed. Opportunity for reform led to philanthropist and Quaker, Richard Humphrey to become the founder of the first institution for formerly enslaved African Americans in Pennsylvania (Cheyney University) to learn basic competencies like reading, writing and mathematics. In his opinion, this allowed them to enter the working world as functioning free people. Gradually more institutions were established by other businessmen and leaders after the passing of the Second Morrill Act of 1890. Originally it was stated that 121 HBCUs existed but today 107 remain in operation or rehabilitation to be open. These fine institutions have produced world leaders such as the first female Vice President of the United States of America, Supreme Court Justice, Business Leaders, Engineers, Scientist, Doctors, Attorneys, and a myriad of other professionals in the workforce.
