Working Title:           Volunteer Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

 

Position Overview

  • The Provost and Executive Vice President (EVP) provides leadership on two levels at the college. First, in the role of Provost, the incumbent works across all divisions at the college to lead various projects and initiatives that support the vision and mission of Barber-Scotia College (BSC). Steps in for the President when the president is absent. Second, as EVP of Academic Affairs, the incumbent fosters a collaborative and inclusive environment to advance high-quality undergraduate and graduate teaching, scholarship, and service. Through the associate provost, vice presidents, academic deans, and directors, the provost supervises, guides, and gives vision to the academic schools and departments in teaching and learning, international studies, graduate studies, undergraduate studies, continuing education, research and sponsored programs, Registrar, and advising.
  • The Provost and EVP is an innovative, collaborative, and relational leader who guides the process of establishing priorities, building consensus and commitment, and making decisions that enhance the vision and mission of BSC. The Provost and EVP understand the challenges and changes affecting higher education in the U.S., particularly at public comprehensive colleges and universities. The Provost and EVP oversee the Academic Affairs Division personnel, budget, programs, facilities, and initiatives and work across all divisions to enhance student success and engagement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Represents and articulates the college's vision and mission to various local, state, and federal agencies. 
  • Serves on appropriate internal and external committees and councils to provide leadership in representing the college. 
  • Participates as a senior Executive Leadership Team member in policy formation, strategic planning, development, resource allocation, organizational structuring, facilities master planning, institutional operations, and public relations. 
  • Works collaboratively with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness to lead accreditation data formation and decision-making.
  • Works collaboratively with the Division of Business and Finance to develop and communicate the college budget, oversee facilities, lead capital planning, and support sustainability initiatives.
  • Acts as a steward of fiscal resources and works on equitable allocation of existing resources while identifying opportunities for developing new revenue streams.
  • Works collaboratively with the Director of Information Technology to support teaching, learning, and other initiatives.
  • Collaborates with the Division of Enrollment and Student Services on the planning, development, and implementation of an integrated marketing and enrollment management plan and on developing, implementing, and evaluating retention initiatives.
  • Working with the President to serve as a primary spokesperson to external bodies, including legislative and other governmental bodies.
  • Working with the deans provides leadership to define a vision for the Division of Academic Affairs in support of BSC's vision and mission.
  • Collaborates with the deans of the various colleges, the library, undergraduate and graduate studies, and department chairs to support faculty teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Leads efforts with the faculty to create an open and welcoming environment for its diverse student body.
  • Ensures that the college supports not only the recruitment of accomplished and diverse faculty and staff but also provides an environment that supports professional growth, which leads to the retention of diverse faculty and staff.
  • Provides leadership for undergraduate and graduate academic planning, evaluation, and assessment of instruction, programs, student academic support, and student learning.
  • Promotes a culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion, creating a learning community of equity and belonging.
  • Provides leadership within Academic Affairs to ensure that decisions are made transparent, collaborative, and consultative through the principles of shared governance.
  • Supervises the following direct reports: Associate Provost, Registrar, Director of Library and Archives Services 
  • Oversees development of budgets for the division and development of guidelines for resource allocation for the academic year.
  • Oversees faculty evaluation and all aspects of faculty appointments, advancement, and retention, including providing support for teaching, scholarship, and service.
  • Promotes professional development for deans, other academic officers, and staff.
  • Actively engages in the recruitment and hiring of new employees. 
  • Clearly defines performance expectations, ensures accountability, and provides ongoing informal feedback, coaching, and mentoring. Conducts formal performance evaluations. 
  • Develops and fosters supportive working relationships, motivation, and engagement. 
  • Communicates information to staff on an ongoing basis to influence staff engagement and make them feel part of a larger community. 
  • Schedules employee work hours/shifts; monitor hours worked; approve payable time and absence requests; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • A doctorate from a recognized regionally accredited institution.
  • A teaching, scholarship, and service record qualifying the candidate for a tenured appointment as a full professor in one of BSC's academic departments.
  • Ten years of leadership and administrative experience in higher education, including demonstrated success at the department level or higher, working to advance and support faculty teaching, scholarship, and service at an institution of similar size.
  • Demonstrated experience working to reduce systemic barriers and advance equity and student success.
  • Successful experience in college and/or programmatic accreditation.
  • Leadership in academic planning and budgeting with a demonstrated understanding of a comprehensive college's financial and operational drivers of performance.
  • Collaborative and inclusive leadership experience working with faculty on academic and college issues under the principles of shared governance.
  • Experience working with faculty in a unionized environment and administering a collective bargaining agreement; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusion and/or experience working with students and/or co-workers from various abilities, backgrounds, and experiences.
